Positivity of homogeneous polynomial forms plays a key role in several
system analysis and control problems.
The main objective of this talk is to present a new technique for
tackling some classes of minimum distance problems, which are relevant to several important problems in the analysis of control systems. By exploiting a sum-of-squares parameterization of homogeneous forms, it is shown that a lower bound to the solution of a quadratic distance problem can be obtained by solving a one-parameter family of LMI feasibility tests. Tightness of the lower bound is investigated, providing both a simple algorithmic procedure for a posteriori optimality testing and a structural condition on the related homogeneous form that ensures optimality a priori. In the second part of the talk, the same homogenous form parameterization is employed to introduce new families of Lyapunov functions, which turn out to be useful for robustness analysis of systems affected by structured uncertainties. It is shown that the use of the proposed Lyapunov functions enhance robust stability tests and robust performance evaluation, both for time-invariant and time-varying uncertainties, with respect to other classes of Lyapunov functions considered in the literature (quadratic, piecewise, linear parameter-dependent, etc.).
